My lab is interested in sensory ecology and understanding how the design and function of animals’ visual systems respond to the physics of the light environment in which they live.  Animals use light signals to guide their behaviors, including sexual selection, individual recognition, and camouflage. We are using cellular electrophysiology and biochemical methods to assess the functional characteristics of the visual system and computational tools to understand neuronal coding mechanisms. Moreover, we work on the neurobiology of learning and memory, using behavior, biochemistry, and synaptic plasticity to address neurodegeneration’s etiology during aging. Another area of my interest in complexity science and I coordinate several multidisciplinary activities at the Complex System Institute in Valparaiso, Chile (www.sistemascomplejos.cl).
